Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Brusdar Graterol’s comeback to the mound was cruelly cut short on Tuesday night after a protracted and difficult recovery from a shoulder injury. Graterol hurt his right hamstring eight pitches into his season debut, leaving the field inconsolable and hurting the Dodgers’ pen.
The injury happened during the Dodgers’ 6-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth inning. Graterol gave J.T. Realmuto a 2-1 sinker, then gripped his hamstring and fell to the mound. He was assisted off the field by teammate Enrique Hernandez and chief sports trainer Thomas Albert after teammates and trainers rushed to his aid.
The 25-year-old reliever is expected to miss a lengthy amount of time due to a grade 3 hamstring strain, which is a serious setback. Manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the long journey Graterol had to go to return to the professional leagues while expressing his sadness.
The absence of Graterol puts further pressure on the Dodgers’ already thin bullpen. The team’s options for relief are currently limited since Blake Treinen, Ryan Brasier, and Michael Grove are also sidelined by injuries. The Dodgers’ bullpen has struggled, with a 4.35 ERA since the All-Star break.
The Dodgers, who relied on Graterol’s effectiveness and expertise to strengthen their bullpen in the closing innings, have suffered a significant loss with his departure. Graterol has been a major player in the last two seasons, appearing in 114 games between 2022 and 2023 and recording a 2.08 ERA and 0.97 WHIP.
The Dodgers will need to rely on other relievers to step up in Graterol’s absence if they are to overcome this setback. Young arms will probably be given a chance to establish themselves at the big league level, and the depth of the team will be put to the test.
This is a terrible setback for Graterol following a protracted and challenging recuperation. But with his tenacity and work ethic, he’ll surely put in endless effort to get back to the mound as soon as possible. The Dodgers will now need to figure out how to play the rest of the season without one of their most dependable relievers.
