“He Was a True Friend”: Ian McShane’s Touching Tribute to Lance Reddick

Renowned for playing Winston in the John Wick series, Ian McShane recently posted a moving ode to his late co-star Lance Reddick. Reddick enthralled audiences with his performance of Charon, the impeccable concierge of the Continental Hotel, before he, unfortunately, died in March 2023 at the age of 60.

In a tearful interview with Entertainment Weekly, McShane recalled Reddick’s professionalism, generosity, and the lasting impression he had on the John Wick movies. “I miss him terribly,” McShane admitted. “He was a fantastic actor and a nice man. On set, we had several amazing moments together.

In the 2014 original John Wick, their characters developed an improbable relationship amid the world of assassins and underground intrigue, marking the beginning of their on-screen collaboration. A defining feature of the series, the connection between Reddick’s Charon and McShane’s Winston provided humorous and affectionate moments throughout the action-packed plot. “Lance brought such dignity and gravitas to Charon,” said McShane. “He was the perfect counterbalance to Keanu [Reeves]’s John Wick.”

The entertainment industry was devastated by Reddick’s unexpected death, and his fans and coworkers felt a great vacuum. The loss was very painful for McShane. The two became great friends outside of the set after working with Reddick for almost ten years. McShane remembered, “We worked together on the Continental set for countless hours.” “We discussed everything, including job, family, and life in general. He truly was a friend.

Fans may expect to see Reddick one final time in the upcoming spinoff Ballerina, which stars Ana de Armas, even after his character died in John Wick: Chapter 4. As a moving reminder of Reddick’s lasting legacy, McShane acknowledged the melancholy nature of this farewell appearance. “It will be strange to see him on screen again, knowing he’s no longer with us,” said McShane. “However, I’m glad he gets one final curtain call. He is deserving of that.

The admiration and regard McShane had for Reddick is evident from his statements.  Reddick’s departure will surely be felt as the John Wick universe grows, but his legacy will always be a significant part of the franchise.  For many years to come, viewers will be moved by his portrayal of Charon, a man characterized by professionalism, commitment, and quiet strength.

Reddick’s varied career included work in video games, television, and movies in addition to the John Wick series. His roles in Bosch, Fringe, Lost, and The Wire made him well-known and demonstrated his talent and range. Additionally, he provided the voice of many video game characters, such as Commander Zavala from the Destiny series.
